"Catcher in the Rye"

What is the significance of the title, The Catcher in the Rye? Discuss the various references to it in the novel, what Holden means by wanting to be the "catcher," and how it relates to Allie and Phoebe.

In the book Holden hears a little boy singing "if a body catch a body coming through the rye." A catcher could also refer to baseball since Allie had the mit that he wrote his poems on.

Holden gets told to play life by the rules by his teacher but in Dead Poets Society Mr. Keating is telling them not to go by the rules.
